Note:
Isaac Low was a successful merchant in New York City and served as a tax commissioner for New York during the French and Indian War. He served on the Continental Congress in 1774, and initially was opposed to ideas such as taxation without representation. However, he disagreed with the Declaration of Independence in 1776, refusing to clash with England during the ensuing conflict of the Revolutionary War. He escaped to New Jersey, was convicted of treason and released by George Washington, and eventually sided with the British, all in the span of three years. He would finally leave America, settling in Cowes, Isle of Wight, England, where he died in 1791. His wife was Margarita Cuyler (1738-1802), the sister of Abraham Cuyler (1742-1810), a mayor of Albany. The inscription on the back of the portrait suggests that Abraham Cuyler received the painting following Low's departure from America.
Overall with some craquelure and extensive inpainting mostly visible under UV light (please see condition images). Re-lined, not examined out of frame.
