A Needlework Sampler
Attributed to Salem, New Jersey, Dated "1796"
worked with polychrome silk threads on a linen ground, depicting floral bouquet, floral urns, butterflies and birds, all bordered by meadering flower vine, inscribed, "Jesus permit thy gracious name to stand/ As the true efforts of my youthful hand/ And while my fingers on the sampler move/ Engage my youthful heart to seek thy love/ With thy dear children let me share apart/ And write thy name dear Jesus on my heart" and initialed and dated at bottom, "S*B/ 1796", matted and framed.
13 1/4 x 11 1/2 inches (sight), 19 1/2 x 18 inches (frame).
