Father of Annie Smith- he was a lawyer, died of T.B. while Annie was attending Vassar, leaving Vassar due to lack of funds, A. took teachers training, taught in Prince Edward Is. and Bucksport, Maine. Smith ancestors were loyalists and fled to New Brunswick during revolution for safety. Fred Smith's brother-in-law was judge on Supreme bench, New Brunswick."
lined; with some subtle cracquelure commensurate with age; overall with green fluorescence throughout revealed under UV light, indicative of a later applied varnish; with some scattered retouching / inpainting, including upper left edge and background, a few spots to face, to chair back, left side of collar / neck, and to jacket to both sides; frame appears to be period, with some losses along edges
