In Giotto in Chicago, Brown spins a fable relaying how Giotto and his circle may have reacted had they had to contend with the judgment of monks [art critics] raving more for the style from the "east" in comparison to their own new bold and representative style. A humorous take on the different philosophies of what was seen as New York abstraction and conceptual art versus the Chicago Imagist movement, Brown specifically lampoons two local critics for not appreciating what was special and interesting in their own backyard.
