This work draws from the Aesopian fable 'The Ant and the Grasshopper' to comment on the art world machine. Within the print, the grasshopper, ant, and four ladybugs have been confined within a cage-like semicircle. Brown considered it imperative to not be so confined as an artist. As he said: "As an artist your role is to sit back and observe objectively. If you become a part of the freak show you’re dead. You’re just another whore. The real job of an artist is to use what’s going on, not be used by it.” As explained by Gregory Brown, the giant grasshopper focuses on the small artist-ant from behind the easel and canvas, surveying the effort of the ant rather than paying attention to the painting itself. While, within Aesop’s Fable, the hard work of the ant is applauded, in Roger's version, the ant’s work is “shit” which only has value when the sorcerer-dealer waves his magic wand over it.
