Sixth plate ambrotype featuring a likely Miami Indian, possibly "Young Chopine," or "pe-cong-gah." Subject wears a federal officer's frock coat with cockade. Label adhered to plate reads, "Shappeen / [indecipherable]." Housed in a full case, fully separated at spine.
In Jacob Piatt Dunn's True Indian Stories: With Glossary of Indiana Indian Names, he writes, "CHOPINE—Two Indian reservations, one in Whitley County and one in Allen County. The name varies to Chappene, Shappeen. It is a French nickname, properly Chopine, meaning a pint measure, that was applied to two Miamis. Old Chopine was Mă-kwah´-kyah, or 'Beaver Head.' Young Chopine was Pē-cŏng´-gah, or 'Striking.'"
