Lot of 12, including price lists, envelopes, and other ephemera, bearing unsigned manuscript notations of Pulitzer and Nobel prize-winning American author Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961). This collection was found by Hemingway's fourth wife, Mary Welsh Hemingway (m. 1946-1961), while cleaning out his belongings from the store room at Sloppy Joe's Bar in Key West, FL in 1962.
Among the highlights are a copy of "Royal's 1934 Book of Gems," 6.5 x 9.5 in., verso with inscription reading, "Pauline H / see page 10," directing his second wife, Pauline Pfeiffer (m. 1927-1940), to a page of diamond rings; piece of hotel stationery, 6.25 x 4.5 in., bearing handwritten address, printed for the Elysee Park Hotel, a favorite Parisian haunt of Hemingway and Pfeiffer; envelope, 6.325 x 3.5 in., addressed to "Mrs. Jasper J. Jepson / Key West / Florida," with three-cent NRA "In a Common Determination" revenue stamp affixed to upper right corner and dated April 9, 1934. Ursula X. "Ura" Hemingway Jepson (1902-1966) was Hemingway's younger sister, and envelope verso printed for "Grace Hall Hemingway - 600 North Kenilworth Avenue - Oak Park, Illinois," the name and address of the novelist's mother. His to-do list appears on verso, reading in part: "To Do without fail Sunday / wire Mike / write Carlos / write Jane / Monday - / write Quintanilla," the latter in reference to Hemingway's friend Luis Quintanilla, an exiled Spanish artist. Two promotional flyers for Mitchell-Henry fishing equipment, 5.25 x 7.125 in. and 5.75 x 8.75 in., with notations reading, "To show bits of the / 'Mitchell-Henry' Outfit" and "The 'Mitchell-Henry' / Reel of ancient vintage / For Greatest Game Fish"; and piece of heavy paper, 8 x 9.75 in., recording the bettors' stakes for a wager with "Herbert" and "Martha," presumably Martha Gellhorn, Hemingway's third wife (m. 1940-1945).
