Relocating from Glenside, Pennsylvania to Centre Bridge in 1923, Kenneth Nunamaker was part of a second generation of New Hope artists. Enamored of the natural beauty of Bucks County and the Delaware River, he devoted the next three and a half decades to painting the region’s picturesque landscapes and quaint villages, as exemplified be Centre Bridge (In the Snow). Mentored by Edward Redfield upon his arrival in New Hope, Nunamaker emulated the elder Impressionist’s methods. Vigorous impasto, a nuanced understanding of the effects of light, and a central path that recedes into the middleground recall Redfield’s own atmospheric depictions of the Delaware River Valley. Captured amid light snow flurries—and in a palette of mottled white, gray, and steel blue—Nunamaker’s Centre Bridge is a celebration of the winter season.

The unlined canvas in overall very good condition. With a very faint upper stretcher bar mark running along the top ⅓ of the work. Examination under UV light reveals a few minor retouching spots (at upper left left in the sky, as well as at center right on the snow near the stream). We also notice a small repaired dot to the left of the faraway steeple at center left. See Specialist's pictures for more details.
