Following a twenty-year residency in Santa Fe, and teaching positions in both Wichita and Minneapolis, Nordfeldt relocated permanently to Lambertville, New Jersey in 1937. The present lot, one of a number of works the artist executed on the theme of outdoor recreation, transports viewers to the frigid banks of the Delaware River. Typical of Nordfeldt’s paintings from the late 1930s and 1940s, the painting is organized into a series of distinct registers: the western bank (or Pennsylvania side) of the Delaware, the river itself, the city of Lambertville, and, farthest from the picture plane, the rolling hills of New Jersey’s Hunterdon County. Anonymous sportsmen engage in a variety of activities, from skating to ice hockey, before the colorful façades of Lambertville’s waterfront. In the foreground—the “sidelines” of the composition—bystanders, hockey sticks in hand, warm themselves beside a fire. Echoing the athletes’ brisk movements, Nordfeldt applies paint in a manner that verges on slapdash—his technique is animated but assured, with an energy befitting the day’s festivities.

In overall fair condition. The work would likely benefit from a light cleaning. Examination under UV light reveals broad, scattered and extensive restoration throughout. Interestingly, none of the figures are inpainted, but the snow is heavily touched up. With broad inpainting also visible in the sky and along the canal, while most of the buildings are intact.
