A Chinese Export porcelain Chew Wilcox service soup plate and plate early 19th century

With overglaze orange and sepia enamel enclosing Wilcocks crest.

Note

The pattern is associated with Benjamin Chew Wilcocks (1776-1845) of Philadelphia. Wilcocks is credited with playing a vital role in expanding trade-including the opium trade- between China and the United States. He served as a commission agent and merchant in Canton, as well as the United States consul at Canton (1813-1822), from about 1812 to 1827. Of unusually tall stature, Wilcocks was nicknamed the "The High Devil" by the Chinese.
