Note

The pattern is associated with Benjamin Chew Wilcocks (1776-1845) of Philadelphia. Wilcocks is credited with playing a vital role in expanding trade-including the opium trade- between China and the United States. He served as a commission agent and merchant in Canton, as well as the United States consul at Canton (1813-1822), from about 1812 to 1827. Of unusually tall stature, Wilcocks was nicknamed the "The High Devil" by the Chinese.
