The back rest caned, with plaque on the back engraved, "Chair Which Belonged to General Marion/ The Swamp Fox of the Revolution."

Note

Francis Marion (c. 1732-1795) of South Carolina fought in the French and Indian War and the Revolutionary War. Nicknamed the "Swamp Fox" for a remarkable ability to outwit and elude the enemy, Marion is considered a founder of modern guerilla warfare .
