The felt stars arranged to form the initials "U S" machine-sewn to a three-part wool bunting canton, tredle machine-sewn wool bunting stripes, canvas header pocket stenciled, "Pat. Aug 12, 1890," retaining period hemp rope. Accompanied by printed sheet of period stationery illustrating the patented flag and captioned, "Design Pat. Aug 12,1890/ Columbian Souvenir," framed with photocopy of the patent date.

The design of this rare flag was patented by W. R. Washburn of Plymouth, Massachusetts. It is one of five or six known to exist.
