Considered Richmond's "leading portrait painter," Peticolas was born in Pennsylvania but relocated to Virginia with his parents in 1804. He took three trips to Europe during his lifetime (1815-1820, 1825, and 1830-1833), which influenced his artistic approach. This portrait illustrates the impact of his travels, the subject being a woman wearing European clothing and standing in an Italian looking landscape. She carries a basket of fruit in one hand and in the other a cluster of grapes.
