With incised and stamped detailing, the crossbar decorated with sixteen stamped stars, the striker stamped "RC" three times, nameplate engraved, "J.N. Simpson."

The Philadelphia Museum of Art has a nearly identical door knocker with variations in decorative detailing and the engraved name, "S. Bower" in its collection, accession number 1912-139.
Robert Carr is listed as a brass founder on Vesey Street in New York City in 1790. He is found in Philadelphia at the following addresses: 13 Cresson's Alley in 1798, Goddard's Alley in 1802; 31 Callowhill Street in 1815; and Pine above 10th in 1820.
Related Eagle-form door knockers were made by brass hardware manufacturers in New England and mid-Atlantic cities. Advertisements in American newspapers for engravers who specialized in door name plates and other signage for businesses appear as early as the 1820s.
