A war hawk, outspoken defender of slavery and states rights, John C. Calhoun was probably the most prominent Southern politician of his time. Calhoun held state and federal political positions from 1808 until his death in 1850: from 1808-1810 as South Carolina State representative; from 1811-1816, as House Representative from South Carolina; from 1817-1825 as Secretary of War under James Monroe; from 1825-1832, as Vice President under John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson; from 1844-1845 as Secretary of State under John Tyler and James Polk; and from 1845-1850 as U.S. Senator from South Carolina.
