A carved mahogany and tooled leather Campeche chair Mexico, late 18th / early 19th century

With shell carved cresting, sloping arms terminating in scrolled hand holds, on curule base with shaped stretchers, the stiles with brass finials.

The first sold on April 20, 2010, Lot 562 (now in the collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art (2012-178-1), and the second sold on November 14, 2018, Lot 22. Alexandra Alevizatos Kirtley discusses the first chair and the history of Campeche or Butaca chairs in American Furniture 1650-1840 Highlights From The Philadelphia Museum of Art (2020), pg. 278-279.
