With shell carved cresting, sloping arms terminating in scrolled hand holds, on curule base with shaped stretchers, the stiles with brass finials.

This chair is closely related to two other Campeche chairs sold in this gallery. The first sold on April 20, 2010, Lot 562 (now in the collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art (2012-178-1), and the second sold on November 14, 2018, Lot 22. Alexandra Alevizatos Kirtley discusses the first chair and the history of Campeche or Butaca chairs in American Furniture 1650-1840 Highlights From The Philadelphia Museum of Art (2020), pg. 278-279. Kirtley notes that it is one of five known examples of this specific form thought to have been made in the same location, with three of the five sharing Philadelphia histories.
