In 1833, Campbell served as a Judge in the Court of Common Pleas. In 1852-1853, he was the State of Pennsylvania Attorney General and under President Franklin Pierce, was appointed U.S. Postmaster General. In 1863, Campbell ran unsuccessfully for the U.S. Senate.
