Kent was a jurist, educator and legal scholar. He served as Chief Justice of the New York Supreme Court from 1804 to 1814 and Chancellor of New York from 1814 to 1823. He was the first professor of law at Columbia College, 1793 to 1798, and is best known for his Commentaries on American Law, published between 1826 and 1830.
