The belt beaded in a polychrome floral vine, printed cotton backing, hide ties; the gauntlets, beaded with polychrome flower, berries, leaf and star, snap closures, fringed; the cylindrical box with scalloped and pierced rim, painted with floral sprigs in polychrome.
L: 29 1/2 in. (belt)Provenance: The Luther R. and Frances T. Zehner Collection.
Accompanied by handwritten note: "Gift from Mr. and Mrs. Walter Hawk, Fort Yates. Mrs. Hawk is Chippewa Indian but this belt was made by a Sioux of Standing Rock." The gauntlets purchased May 28, 1950 from John Bob Tiger: "A fine pair of beaded gauntlets. These were a gift to John about 1944 from his cousin, Mrs. Nancy Lambert from the Rose Bud Reservation." The box was purchased from Reuben Takes The Gun. Dr. Zehner's diary records that the box was "obtained from the Oglala Sioux at Pine Ridge about 12 years ago when Reuben got them from his brother-on-law, Kills Small."
