Federal mahogany cylinder desk attributed to george hendree (1792-1834), richmond, va

Rectangular top with reeded edge above cylinder top opening to a fitted interior with bird's-eye maple drawer fronts, above diagonally reeded molding and graduated drawers with turned pulls, flanked by reeded chevroned stiles, on French bracket feet.

In 1813 George Hendree and Chester Sully, brother of painter Thomas Sully, announced the opening of their cabinet shop in Richmond, Virginia. Hendree was working independently in Richmond by 1815. A mahogany cylinder desk by Hendree was included in the 1952 exhibit of Southern Furniture, 1640-1820, at the Virginia Museum in Richmond and illustrated Magazine Antiques January 1952, pg. 77, fig. 93.
