Literature: A meat carving platter and Mazzarine from this service are described and illustrated in David Sanctuary Howard's New York and the China Trade, New York Historical Society, 1984, pg. 116, illus. C75. Howard suggests that the service was made for the wealthy socialite John Hone (d. 1832), who partnered with his brother Philip Hone (1780-1851) to form the successful auction house "Philip and John Hone." He purports that it may have been commissioned in honor of John Hone II's marriage to Marie Antoinette Kane in 1818.
