Prussian blue canton with seventeen, five-pointed cotton stars, with thirteen stripes, seven cochineal red and six white stripes, the hoist with three sewn grommets, hoist bears inscription, "R I 8" or "R T 8" and the other side, "Miss Street," or "Miss Streeter" three times in pencil, hand-sewn throughout, framed. Accompanied by note, "This flag was hand sewn by the sailors of the U.S.S. Shanandore in the harbor of Rio Janeiro So. America when there were only 17 States in the Union." Framed.
38 3/4 in. x 72 in. (sight)Rare seventeen star example is correct in size and construction for a naval boat flag made prior to standardization in the 1850 period. Accompanied by fiber and dye analysis, dated 21January 2009.
