The American Museum "under the patronage of the Tammany Society" was announced in this broadside originally published in 1791, a public venture unique among fraternal organizations. The museum was operated by John Pintard and Gardner Baker who took control of the Museum from the Society in 1795. After his death, it was purchased by William I. Waldron, who in turn sold it to painter Edward Savage, to John Scudder by 1809. After his death in 1821, it passed through his heirs before they sold it P.T. Barnum who rebranded it to Barnum's American Museum. The collections, which persisted until 1865 consisted of both education and "strange" attractions.
