[FLAGS & PATRIOTIC TEXTILES]. Centennial banner, 1876.
approx. 51 1/2 x 46 1/2 in., painted cotton banner (scattered losses to paint, chipping at edges with approx. 4 1/2 x 2 in. section loss near bottom right corner, creasing and some tears at folds, overall wear).
Center patriotic motif featuring eagle with talons grasping crossed American flags and beak holding "Life Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness" riband, entirety of which is encircled by the names of the states in the Union. Eagle surmounted by "Declaration of Independence Adopted July 4 1776" and "Centennial Celebration of Independence July 4 1876" below.
The nation's 1876 centennial was widely celebrated and a great variety of patriotic textiles were created for the anniversary. This particular style banner seems to be scarce, with just one similar banner located at auction.
