John Henry Twachtman at May 2018 Fine Art

The May fine art auctions at Leslie Hindman Auctioneers will be conducted May 23 and 24 and include Post War and Contemporary Art, Fine Prints and American and European Art auctions. All three will be conducted in the Chicago saleroom and online. Artists include Andy Warhol, Pablo Picasso and John Henry Twachtman.

The Post War and Contemporary Art sale on May 23 will feature over 200 paintings, works on paper, photography and sculpture. Highlights of the sale include a Tom Wesselmann liquitex on bristol board, Bedroom Blonde with Green Wallpaper #1, 1985, with a presale estimate of $100,000 to 150,000; an untitled Willem de Kooning oil on newsprint laid to canvas from 1977, with a presale estimate of $80,000 to 120,000; and Ron Gorchov’s Procession, with a presale estimate of $50,000 to 70,000.

Among the session of sculpture will be a Louise Nevelson, Night Zag XVII, from 1973, which carries a presale estimate of $50,000 to 70,000 and Alan Saret’s 1979 – 80 Constellation, which will be offered with a presale estimate of $15,000 – 25,000. Other artists included in the sale are Richard Anuszkiewicz, George Copeland Ault, Amy Sillman, Ed Paschke, Gershon Iskowitz, Sam Francis, Alexander Calder and Anne Truitt, to name a few.

The May 23 Fine Prints auction will follow the Post War and Contemporary Art auction in the afternoon. The sale will offer over 300 lots, with examples from the 16th century through the contemporary. Highlights from the sale include a Pablo Picasso, Faune dévoliant une femme, with a presale estimate of $40,000 to 60,000; Mary Cassatt’s In the Opera Box with an estimate of $30,000 to 50,000; and Love by Andy Warhol, with a presale estimate of $30,000 to 40,000.

Following the May 23 auctions will be an American and European Art sale on May 24. Les Fleurs de Paris by Louis Marie De Schryver will be offered with a presale estimate of $150,000 to 250,000 and Ruins at Sunset by Jasper Francis Cropsey carries a presale estimate of $80,000 to 120,000.

Another highlight of the sale is John Henry Twachtman’s The Back Road, which has a presale estimate of $80,000 to 120,000. Lisa N. Peters, Ph.D. and author of the artist’s forthcoming catalogue raisonné, notes that The Back Road “is representative of the stylistic apex of Twachtman’s career.” Additionally, Childe Hassam, Twachtman’s friend and fellow American Impressionist, once owned the painting. Other artists included in the sale are George William Sotter, James Ensor, Edouard Vuillard and William Merritt Chase, to name a few.
