Jewelry Auction Realizes 4.6 Million at Leslie Hindman Auctioneers

Diamonds and Sapphires Bring Top Results for Leslie Hindman Auctioneers’ April 3 and 4 Important Jewelry Auction

The April 3 and 4 Important Jewelry and Fine Timepieces auctions at Leslie Hindman Auctioneers offered an array of fine diamonds and colored stones, signed jewels and important antique works. The sales totaled $4.6 million, with the top five lots being impressive diamonds followed by sapphires, including examples by Van Cleef & Arpels and Harry Winston.

Among the leading lots was a Golconda-type diamond and ruby ring that sold for $305,000 against a presale estimate of $250,000 – 300,000. An additional Golconda-type diamond of nearly six carats sold for $287,000.

A vintage ring with a square emerald cut stone of 8.00 carats sold for $149,000, a 4.68 carat marquise cut Art Deco ring sold for $118,750, and a rectangular brilliant cut ring with a 10.02 carat stone sold for $137,000.

In addition to strong results for diamonds, lots featuring sapphires sold well at the Important Jewelry auction. A platinum, diamond and mystery set sapphire campanule brooch by Van Cleef & Arpels sold for $93,750 against a presale estimate of $50,000 – 70,000. A pair of matching platinum, diamond and mystery set sapphire campanule earclips sold for $81,250 against the same presale estimate.

Additional results for signed sapphire examples include a fine platinum, diamond and sapphire spray brooch by Harry Winston, circa 1966, that sold for $68,750 and a platinum topped gold, Montana Sapphire and diamond butterfly brooch by Marcus & Co. that sold for $45,000. Also in the sapphire category, an important Belle Époque platinum, Montana Sapphire and diamond bracelet, circa 1910, sold for $81,250 and a 5.03 carat oval mixed cut Padparadscha sapphire sold for $35,000.

An additional highlight was a fine graduated single strand natural pearl necklace that sold for $60,000 against a presale estimate of $20,000 – 30,000.
