The first half of 2024 marked a period of robust growth for Freeman’s | Hindman, the nation's oldest auction house with one of the largest footprints. The firm held 75 auctions, achieving an average sell-through rate by lot of 90%. Bidder activity spanned 97 countries, with a 16% average increase in registrations per sale. This growth is highlighted by the ongoing success of single-owner offerings, robust sale results, and new appointments within the firm.
We began 2024 with the sale of What Do You See? The Collection of Sidney Rothberg on February 27 and 28, achieving a two-day total of $4.9 million. After a global tour that exhibited the collection in Paris, New York, and Chicago, more than 240 works were sold in Rothberg’s beloved hometown of Philadelphia before a packed saleroom. Over the two days, 93% of the lots sold, with 1,099 bidders vying for works within this esteemed collection. This momentum continued throughout the spring with strong results for property from notable collectors including Michael Mennello, Richard C. McKenzie, Philip Pearlstein, Donald H. Wonder, Aline Elwes McDonnell, Laura Pels, and many more.
Following the announcement of our permanent gallery and saleroom in the heart of New York’s Upper East Side, Freeman’s | Hindman was honored to present The Private Collection of Secretary Madeleine K. Albright on May 7 and 8. The diverse selection of fine jewelry, furniture, decorative arts, ephemera, books, and more from this respected politician achieved more than quadruple its pre-sale estimate. Over 1,000 bidders registered for the sales, with over 37% being first-time clients.
The year has also brought new faces to our team, including Roger Ward as Head of Design, Leslie Calero as Director of Trusts, Estates & Private Clients in Naples, and Christopher Brink as Senior Specialist of Books and Manuscripts. As we continue building our team, we applaud their ability to bring exceptional property to market while providing our clients with a full-service auction experience.
