Freeman's | Hindman Presents Prints from the Collection of People For the American Way
Freeman’s | Hindman is excited to offer a selection of limited-edition, contemporary prints by renowned artists from the collection of People For the American Way and People For the American Way Foundation in our September 25 Prints and Multiples auction. The proceeds of this sale will power People For the American Way's mission to preserve democracy and fund efforts to get out the vote in this fall’s election.
From its founding by legendary TV producer Norman Lear in 1981, People For the American Way has enjoyed a close relationship with giants of the arts and entertainment world. Many of these visionary creators were personal friends of Lear himself, and this collection includes pieces by the greatest visual artists of the 20th century, including Ed Ruscha, Robert Rauschenberg, Robert Indiana, Chuck Close, Richard Serra, and Cindy Sherman.
An Advocacy Home for America’s Greatest Artists
There has long been a natural alliance between People For the American Way, an organization dedicated to freedom of speech and expression, and great American artists.
A high-profile collaboration took place in the year after People For’s founding, when pop art pioneer Roy Lichtenstein volunteered to create an original work for the organization. His creation, “I Love Liberty,” began a long tradition of visual artists working with People For the American Way.
Since then artists who have found a home for their political advocacy at People For the American Way have partnered with the organization in numerous ways. In addition to creating works especially for the organization, they have donated works to help People For raise money to protect our democracy.
The images in this collection include Robert Indiana’s stark political commentary “Peace Plunges in Despair”; Robert Rauschenberg’s “Unity,” originally created for the Al Gore campaign; Chuck Close’s 2018 portrait of Norman Lear; and “Compass,” by longtime People For supporter Ed Ruscha.
Collect Art, Save Democracy
People For the American Way is literally “opening the vault” to save democracy. This is the organization’s first auction of work from its collection, and it’s an extraordinary opportunity to own great art.
Proceeds from this sale will benefit People For the American Way and People For the American Way Foundation’s longstanding efforts to protect our democratic institutions and elections.
