Collector and Patron Olga Hirshhorn
Few collectors have large enough collections to found a museum, make significant donations to others and still have items to sell at auction. Olga and Joseph H. Hirshhorn were among the few. As arts patrons, their contributions are many, the most notable being the founding by Joseph of the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C.
Together they collected works by some of the most famous and respected artists of the 20th century, including Alexander Calder, Willem de Kooning, Georgia O’Keefe and Pablo Picasso. Along the way, Olga and Joe became friends with the artists, visiting them in their studios or hosting them at one of their many homes, like arts patrons have done for centuries.
Personal photographs of Olga and Joe Hirshhorn with artists such as Georgia O’Keefe, Pablo Picasso and Edward Steichen are part of the Estate of Olga Hirshhorn to be sold December 1 and 2 at Leslie Hindman Auctioneers’ West Palm Beach saleroom. In addition to these personal photographs of prominent figures, the auction includes a collection of Georg Jensen silver, antique weather vanes and artwork. The collection was consigned through Leslie Hindman Auctioneers’ Naples office and comes from “Sweet Spot Cottage,” Olga’s home in Naples, where she split her time between Martha’s Vineyard and Washington, D.C.
