We asked Marshall to pick his favorite items from our upcoming February 27 Property from Villa Massei, Lucca, Italy auction.
The collection from Villa Massei is filled with elegant, stately and finely executed objects. I am struck by how such an eclectic collection can feel so harmonious. This Chinese carved white glazed porcelain vase and this Louis XV style painted fauteuil from the 18th century perfectly complement each other.
The entire collection, particularly this Italian metal mounted walnut sette, is sculptural and finely wrought with lovely proportions and finish.
I love how the modern pieces, like this group of three Italian black-fired ewers, work along with the classically composed pieces, like this Italian fruitwood bergere. This spanning of design epochs creates a depth to the collection that reminds me of the New York apartment of Bill Blass.
These table lamps as well as this Filippo Morghen engraving each represent the best of their era and type, displaying an appreciation and understanding of decorative objects.
