Lot Description

James Earle Fraser (American, 1876-1953) Standing Horse

Bronze, brown patina, signed in cast 'Fraser'. This sculpture is related to James Earle Fraser's iconic masterpiece "End of the Trail," a seminal work of art commenting on the old American West. Fraser recalled in his memoirs an old Dakota trapper saying, 'The Indians will someday be pushed into the Pacific Ocean.' Later he translated this idea into a sculpture of a despondent Native American on an exhausted horse, representing the end of the trail at the edge of the Pacific. In 1915, Fraser displayed a monumental plaster version of the work at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco, earning popular acclaim and a gold medal.
