Approx. 16 x 13 x 3 in. (closed dimensions) tarred canvas knapsack with 3 leather fastening straps, 3 blanket straps, and 2 shoulder straps connected to a breast strap which buckles together for easy removal (knapsack complete, with wear and crackling to finish and leather, and general wear and tear throughout). Interior features a 4 in. leather strip at top separating the 2 bags, with 2 straps to hold a rolled greatcoat. Bottom bag is 15 x 12 in., open at top. Top bag is 14 x 8 in., made of black enameled cloth.

This knapsack differs in many characteristics from the more commonly seen 1864 pattern example. An identical knapsack is described and illustrated in Frederick Todd's American Military Equipage, Vol. I., pages 8 and 10. Noted there is its use by a soldier in the 24th Ohio Volunteer Infantry.
