Lot Description

[MAGIC LANTERN SLIDES]. A group of 37  miscellaneous glass viewing slides including chromatrope mechanical examples.

Lot includes: Three mechanical slides. All three resemble kaleidoscope views. Kaleidoscopes themselves became popular in Europe in the 1818 or so (patented in July 1817). One has a handle for moving the slides, the other two do not.

Eleven (11) long slides (3 x 9-1/2 in.), each with color images of four animals, in many cases related. Each is numbered both by plate and each individual image. Thus "Taf. I" has images 1 - 4; "Taf. II," 5 - 8; etc. I - monkeys; II - big cats; III - dogs (including wolves, wild dogs, etc.); IV - bears; V - missing; VI - elephant, rhinoceros, tapir (paper stuck to two images); VII - camels, camelids, kangaroo; VIII - sheep/goats; IX - wild bovines (bison, cape buffalo); X - antelopes; XI - deer; XII - hippos, wild pigs.

Ten (10) long slides in wood box with sliding lid. These show panoramic views of places and events. There is a naval battle and a land battle (2); another has ships in a storm; one has four Kaisers - Kaiser Wilhelm I, II, III and the crown prince, Friedrich Wilhelm; another with four large buildings (Schloss Herrenchiemsee, Schloss Linderhoff, Schloss Nerschwanstein, Schloss Berg); one shows acrobats in a circus, some on horseback; another has monkeys in a zoo, some drinking and smoking, painting, etc.; one shows scenes from the middle east including a mosque; another has a panorama of Holland, complete with windmills.

And 13 photomicrographs, many by William R. Berkhofer, Brielle, N.J. These 3 xx 4 in. slides have pathological sections: cancer of uterus; adenomycosis pregnancy (3); biliary cirrhosis; kidney;  liver; endometriosis; more. The pathology is manuscript and a few have smeared or are cramped and hard to read.
