Col. John Riddle was a native of New Jersey (b.1761). He moved to Ohio in 1790. Col. Riddle was a blacksmith by trade, but only practiced this part-time after moving to Ohio, spending the rest of his time clearing land for farming. His son, John, was born in Cincinnati and attended public schools. He married Catherine Long, a native of Springfield Township. John became a full-time farmer in Springfield Township. The family owned several farms in the township over the years, most in the Glendale area. John's youngest son remained on the farm to assist his father, and, upon his father's retirement, purchased the farm, continuing the family farming and stock breeding tradition.
