Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR] -- [GAR & UCV]. A group of 9 items, incl. photographs, certificates, and declaration of mourning.
Albumen photograph, ca late 1860s or after, appears to be reunion of armed GAR veterans just after the Civil War. Approx. 7-1/2 x 10 in. With it is a negative of the same image with a number of people and places labeled: The Band; P.O. & News Depot; Flag and Flag Bearer; Restaurant; Photographer's store; Hotel; and "Dirt Village Square (cart tracks visible in original picture)."
[With:] Grand Army of the Republic Veteran photo in fancy frame. Shows veteran with GAR button and membership badge. Photo max. 4 x 5-1/2 in. Max. frame approx. 10 x 14 in.
[With:] 2 Grand Army of the Republic Transfer Card Certificates. Each approx. 9 x 11-1/2. One for Wm. Morton who served 3 years in the 31st Wis. Vols. verifying that he is a member in good standing of the Parker Post No. 17, and recommending him for admission to any Post. 17 May 1886. The second for Silas Yates, 3rd MO Cav., a member in good standing of the Sheridan Dix Post No. 7. 2 June 1913.
[With:] GAR declaration of mourning from Cushing Post #19. Written in white ink on blank background. 9-1/2 x 13-1/2 in. (sight) Complete in frame 17 x 20-3/4 in. In honor of H.J. Crawford, enlisted 13 Aug. 1862 in the 1st Reg. Wis. Cav. "Well done good and faithful servant."
[With:] Illinois GAR headquarters document, 1887. 8 x 10-1/2 in. Shows number posts and membership for the year. At the end of September, Illinois had 501 posts with 28,592 members, from 515 posts with 27,333 members at the end of the previous quarter.
[With:] 2 GAR envelopes to Modesto, California, c. 1893. Business-sized envelopes with GAR logo on left side. Both to "Grant Post No. 9" in Modesto.
[With:] United Daughters of the Confederacy membership certificate from 1922. 12 x 14-1/4 in. Certifying Mrs. Parrish Geiger Etter is the grand-daughter of Col. William Miller, 1st MO militia. (darkened, water stains)
