FIRST EDITION of the regimental history of the 8th Kentucky Infantry (Union) by unit veteran Thomas J. Wright. He enlisted on 3 October 1861 as a lieutenant and was commissioned into Company H of the 8th Kentucky on 15 January 1862. He was promoted on 18 March 1863. Originally engaged in the defense of eastern Kentucky, the regiment saw heavy action at La Vergne, TN, and in the Battle of Stone's River. They were also heavily involved in the Battle of Lookout Mountain (poetically referred to as the "battle above the clouds") and the early Atlanta campaign. They ended service on guard duty in Chattanooga.
