Lot Description

[CIVIL WAR] -- [MAINE]. Tin muster roll box identified to Co. A, 19th Maine Regiment, accompanied by stage trunk identified to Maine manufacturer.


Tin muster roll box with original green paint, approx. 18 1/4 x 20 1/4 x 20 3/4 in. (scratches, paint loss, corrosion especially in box interior). Front stenciled "Muster Rolls" identification and interior of lid stamped near center  "Co. A, 19th, Me. Reg't." 

The 19th Maine was organized in Bath with soldiers mustering in August 1862 and mustered out in 1865. The regiment participated in significant engagements throughout its service including at Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Wilderness, Spotsylvania Court House, Cold Harbor, and Hatcher's Run.

[With:] 19th-century stage trunk of leather and wood with brass stud ornamentation, 14 x 24 x 13 in. Interior lined with vintage newspapers and decorative paper. (Cracking to leather, losses to interior linings and brass studs, only one retaining strap for opening remains.) Interior label by maker "[AS]A SAWYER / Saddle, Harness, Trunk Maker / and / Chaise-Trimmer / Bangor, (Me.)"
