Lot Description

[CIVIL WAR]. A group of 2 charcoal portraits, incl. 1st Lieutenant Andrew McFarlane, Co. K, 23rd Wisconsin Infantry, DOW Vicksburg.


Charcoal head and shoulders portrait of male subject in uniform, n.d. [ca 1890-1910], 10 3/4 x 13 3/4 in. (sight) framed to 17 1/4 x 20 1/4 in. (unexamined outside frame, adhesive residue on glass). Lower right with "Drake Portrait Co. Poynette Wis." Housed in wooden frame (scratches, wear). Subject identified on framed interior paper as "Andrew J. McFarlane."

HDS indicates McFarlane enlisted on 8/15/1862 as a private with Co. H, Wisconsin 23rd Infantry, rising to the rank of 1st Lieutenant in Co. K. He was wounded 5/20/1863 at Vicksburg and died of wounds on 7/4/1863 at Portage, WI.
