Lot Description

[CIVIL WAR - CONFEDERACY]. BEALE, Richard Lee Turberville (1819-1893). History of the Ninth Virginia Cavalry, in the War Between the States. Richmond, VA: B.F. Johnson Publishing Company, 1899. 


8vo. Frontispiece. (Toning.) Original publisher's red cloth gilt (occasional staining, wear to corners). Provenance: Henry L. Thrift, 1900 (ownership inscription to interior front board). Thrift was a veteran of the 9th cavalry, enlisting at 17 years old on 1 May 1864 as a private, mustering into Company C the same day. He was WIA by a gunshot to the left foot on 29 July 1864. He is listed as taking the Oath of Allegiance on 6 May 1865 at Westmoreland Court House, VA.

FIRST EDITION regimental history. Formed in January 1862 around the nucleus of the 1st Battalion, Virginia Cavalry, known as "Lee's Legion." The regiment saw heavy action participating in First and Second Bull Run (Manassas), Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Brandy Station, Gettysburg, the Overland Campaign, Siege of Petersburg, the Valley Campaigns of 1864, and the Appomattox Campaign.
