Lot Description
[NEW MEXICO]. A group of 3 photographs, incl. Hermanos Penitentes Whips and Penitentes at Worship. Ca 1890s.
4 1/4 x 6 3/4 in. silver gelatin cabinet photograph on black mount. (Contrast a bit weak, some spotting.) Accompanied by 4 1/2 x 6 3/4 in. silver print of the same image, unmounted. (Edge and corner wear, including some loss to corners).
View of three braided whips, made from the leaf of the amole weed, used by the Hermanos Penitentes to flagellate themselves.
[With:] Penitentes at Worship, NM. 7 3/8 x 4 3/8 in. boudoir card featuring drawing. (Slight loss to top left corner of print; edge and corner wear to mount, including creased and damaged top left corner). Titled and numbered 429 in negative. Printed information regarding “The City of Santa Fe. The Santa Fe Route. Views along the line of the A. T. & S. F. Railway a specialty” with a description of Santa Fe on the verso.
The illustration features three kneeling hooded figures in front of a cross and an adobe building.
