Lot Description

[NATIVE AMERICANS]. A group of souvenirs highlighted by beadwork and postcards featuring Native American subjects. 


Mason, Otis Tufton. North American Bows, Arrows, and Quivers. Washington: GPO, 1894. 8vo, printed wraps.  From the Smithsonian Report for 1893, pp. 631-679 (with plates XXXVII – XCIV). (tape repairs on spine, scuffing of page edges)

Suede drawstring bag with tag “Made by the Cherokees, Qualla Reservation, Cherokee, N.C.” on one side; “Made in America by Native Americans” on the other.

Beaded necklace, turtle wit stone “shell,” approx. 2 x 2.5 in. With handwritten note “White Mtn. Apache.”

Beaded necklace, turtle medallion (all beaded), 3 in. diam. With business card from Little Turtle Creations, no address, listing only a phone with Indianapolis area code (apparently predates internet).

Plus a collection of 19 brass tacks and silver plated tacks, various sizes, such as those used on gun stocks and pipe stems. 

Group of 11 postcards with color illustrations of native Americans from photographs by F.A. Rinehart, Omaha, NE. Chief Red Cloud, Sioux; Big-Man; Rain in the Face, Sioux; Chief Sitting Bull, Sioux; Chief Wolf Robe, Cheyenne; Little Bear and White Bull, Sioux, in cradleboards; and another pair of unnamed little boys, one holding bow and arrows; one of a toddler girl and second of same child on her mother’s back; a young man holding arrows; and a young woman in all her finery, including a “whirling log” necklace.
