Lot Description

[ABRAHAM LINCOLN]. 1908 Lincoln Centennial Medal with 6 Lincoln-related works, comprising: 


The Lincoln Centennial Medal. Presenting the Medal of Abraham Lincoln by Jules Edouard Roiné, Together with Papers on The Medal: Its Origin and Symbolism by George N. Olcott, and The Lincoln Centennial commemoration by Richard Lloyd Jones and Certain Characteristic Utterances of Abraham Lincoln. New York and London: G.P. Putnam's Sons, The Knickerbocker Press, 1908.

8vo. Bronze medal set in paste paper die-cut mount bound in (chip to mount corner, toning, occasional pencil marks). Original publisher's navy blue cloth gilt with pictorial label of the medal.

FIRST EDITION featuring the Centennial Medal, a high relief struck bronze medallion by French-American sculptor and master medal engravery, Jules Edouard Roiné (1857-1916). The obverse features a detailed profile portrait of Lincoln bearing his name and life dates, "Abraham Lincoln / 1809 / 1865" alongside Roiné's mark and copyright. The reverse features the words "Emancipation / Proclamation / Signed / January First 1863" with Lincoln's facsimile signature surrounded by a wreath of laurel and oak. The edge bears the words "Liberator / 1909 / Centennial commemoration."
