Lot Description

[NATIVE AMERICANS]. SAWYERS & CONNOLLEY, photographers. Shooting Government Issue Beef. Standing Rock Reservation. Purcell, Indian Territory [Oklahoma]: ca 1880. 


5 1/2 x 3 7/8 in. cabinet card on cardstock mount with verso inscription, "Issue day at Standing Rock. Sioux shooting beef in enclosure" (rich tonality; short tear/imperfection along left edge of mount, scattered spotting to mount verso). Photographer's imprint on mount recto. Groups of people are shown standing around and sitting on top of a corral with live and dead cattle inside. The US Government issued beef “on the hoof” to the Sioux where they would be dressed by the women after being shot.
