Lot Description
[1888 ELECTION]. Campaign bandanas, jugate fan, and other ephemera from the Grover Cleveland and Allen G. Thurman 1888 campaign, comprising:
Two jugate bandanas: one is 20. x 24 in. with flags re: taxes and tariffs in the corners (Threads of History 616, p. 266); the other is 22 x 23 in. with "Our Candidates / 1888 / Bandana" (Threads...620, p. 267).
[With:] Parade sign / fan with jugate images, ca 6-7 in. in diameter with wooden handle. "Compliments of Baker Publishing Co." on front and extensive advertising on verso, including tobacco, tailors, stoves, clothing, pawnbrokers, etc.
[With:] Cdv of Edwin Ford in parade outfit. His hat has "Cleveland & Thurman" on the front. Backmarked J.P. King, Waterloo, Iowa and is inscribed to his aunt, Esther Burdick. "Taken aug. 1888."
[With:] 2.5 x 4.25 in. card with Cleveland on one side, jugate portraits on verso. Compliments of Daubmann Brothers & Co., Baltimore, MD. Jugate cover with a paragraph about Cleveland ("A Statesman. A Friend to Labor. A Democrat. Etc." Unused. Second cover with small jugate line drawing upper left, marcher with his torch lower left, and the torch lower right. Pre-addressed to "E. Nason & Co., Headquarters for all Campaign Goods." Advertising card with jugate images, "Compliments of The Arlington Drug Store, Maryville, Mo. " Verso with advertising for Dr. McLane's Liver Pills.
[With:] Two small cdv-style cards, each 1-3/8 x 2-1/8 in., one each of Cleveland and Thurman. Card with "Presidential Souvenir" and jugate images of candidates. Backmarked Joseph A. Wolford, printer. Two engravings of Grover Cleveland, approx. 4.5 x 6.5 in., with advertising for Mandel Brothers European Novelties and H. Hamilton Painting supplies, wall paper, window glass, etc. Advertising card for Allen Thurman "The Underwood Whip Co., Wooster, Ohio," 3-1/4 x 4-3/8 in. card. Card for Thurman, also advertising H. Hamilton painting supplies. And 4.25 x 6.5 in. card with Thurman's portrait and advertising for James R. Doran Livery and Feed Stables, "Rear of S.W. R.R. Passenger Depot, Uniontown, Pa."
