The issue features a prominent eagle display and bold front page “stacked” headlines announcing the surrender of Lee to Grant at Appomattox Court House, marking the end of the Civil War. The headlines read, “Peace ! / The Closing Victory of the War ! / Surrender of General Lee and His Whole Army ! / Terms of the Capitulation…”
