Lot Description

[CIVIL WAR]. CDV of Thibodaux, LA, street view inscribed by 16th Indiana Infantry Private John Roszell. 24 April 1865. 


3 1/4 x 1 3/4 in. albumen CDV on cardstock mount (minor fading). Period ink inscription to recto: "Thibodaux La April 24th/65 / Corners of Jackson and Main Street." Period ink inscription to verso: "We are encamped at the foot / of this street - it is now a /  beautiful street. / Johnny Roszell." 

Fayette County, IN, resident John Roszell enlisted on 16 August 1862 as a private and mustered into Co. A, 16th Indiana Infantry. He was mustered out on 30 June 1865 at New Orleans, LA. The 16th Indiana saw action in several major battles including the Battle of Richmond, Battle of Chickasaw Bayou, Siege of Vicksburg, and the Red River Campaign.
