Lot Description

[CIVIL WAR]. Quarter plate tintype and ambrotype of identified artilleryman,  Charles W. Palfray, 4th Massachusetts Heavy Artillery, and his father. 


Quarter plate hand-tinted tintype. (Great clarity, slight crackling to surface; resealed.) Ink inscription behind image reads, "Warwick Palfray / and Son Charles W Palfray." Subject's pants tinted blue and tie tinted red. -- Quarter plate ambrotype. (Good clarity, some discoloration to top edge; resealed.) Subject wears a badge bearing a 5-point star. -- Together, 2 images housed together in a figural Union case, Roger deCoverly and the Gypsies' Fortune 1 [Berg 1-37] with non-functioning closure and chipping.

Charles W. Palfray enlisted as a private on 6 August 1864 at Lynn, Massachusetts, where he worked at a shoemaker. Later that month he mustered into Company B, 4th Massachusetts Heavy Artillery Regiment. He was mustered out on 17 June 1865 at Washington, DC.
