8vo (199 x 123 mm). 6 engraved folding plates. (Some minor browning or spotting.) Modern calf antique.
FIRST EDITION, second issue, with the cancel title re-worded "New Microscopical Discoveries..." and with the updated dedication. "Needham's most important contributions to science were early observations of plant pollen and the milt vessels of the squid, a forward-looking theory of reproduction, and a classic experiment for determining whether spontaneous generation occurs on the microscopic level" (DSB).
